Fires Burn in India's
Himalayan Mountains Causing Global Smog and Pollution
India (HDW) October 26, 2004 –
Intentional fires set by people clearing
land for agriculture within the nation of India are adding to the
smog and haze within Asia. These fires were caught by a NASA satellite
as it passed over the Indian sub-continent yesterday. Other factors
that contribute to regional smoke, smog, and haze include urban
pollution and natural dust storms, but the effect of intentional
fires on this smoke can not be denied. As India’s population
and economy grow, more fires and more pollution can be anticipated

Volcano Miyake-Jima Erupts Japan
(HDW) April 2, 2002 - Mount
Oyama, located on the Japanese island of Miyake-Jima, continues
to erupt and discharge significant quantites of sulfur dioxide
gas from its summit crater. Scientists estimate the volcano
is emitting sulfur dioxide at a rate of between 10,000 and

Fires Burn
Unchecked on South Pacific Island of Borneo Borneo
(HDW) August 10, 2004 - On
August 10, 2004, scores of fires were burning across the island
of Borneo. Fires were burning in the Sarawak region of Malaysia,
which occupies the northern part of the island, as well as
the Kalimantan region of Indonesia, which occupies the southern
part. Fires are especially concentrated in the West, around
the coastal city of Sinkawang (lighter green area south of

Fires in Indonesia Blanket the South Pacific in Smoke
Indonesia (HDW) September 7,
2004 - Slash-and-burn forest
clearing and open cropland burning on the Indonesian island
of Sumatra and in the Kalimantan portion of the island of
Borneo are blanketing the region with a pall of haze that
has delayed air travel and prompted government officials to
distribute gas masks to island residents, according to various
