Vanuatu Nation (HDW)
April 27, 2004 - In the South Pacific Ocean east of Australia,
the 83 islands that make up the Vanuatu nation are dotted with countless
craters from active and extinct volcanoes. Among the most dangerous
is the almost-permanently active Ambrym Volcano. In this pair of
images captured on April 27, 2004, a large plume of volcanic ash
is blowing westward from the volcano, which appears at the center

Dry
Seaeson in Australia Leads to Many Fires
Australia
(HDW) June 17, 2004 - Early dry season fires (red dots) were
burning across Arnhem Land in Northern Territory, Australia, at
the time of this image captured on June 17, 2004. Fires were also
detected on Melville Island, to the northwest of the mainland across
Van Diemen Gulf, which is filled with streamers of tan-colored sediment.

Wildfires
and Controlled Fires Burn Together in Northern Australia
Australia (HDW) September 6, 2004 -
Fires, marked in red, are scattered around
Australia's Northern Territory in this true-color Aqua MODIS image
from September 3, 2004. While many of these fires are likely part
of a planned, controlled burning program, others are also wildfires.
Many of the fires send clouds of blue-grey smoke into the sky; the
smoke floats up, then in an upper layer of the atmosphere, winds
begin carrying the smoke off to the northwest. (full
