Fires and Smoke Continue to Grow on the Brazil-Bolivia Border Brazil (HDW) September 9, 2004 - On September 9, 2004, smoke from fires in the Amazon and the savannas to the south hung over South America near the border of Bolivia (bottom left) and Brazil (top). These two images show the region early and late in the day, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites. Active fires burning at the time of each overpass are marked in red. These images are centered to the west of the area shown in the series “Fires Near Xingu River.” |
